With the rapid obsolescence of smartphones, servers, computers, and home appliances, e-waste is the fastest-growing waste stream on earth. Unlike common scrap, printed circuit boards (PCBs) contain dense concentrations of precious metals—including gold, silver, palladium, and high-grade copper.

Urban Mining: Why E-Waste is So Valuable

A single ton of sorted computer motherboard scrap contains up to 40 to 80 times more gold than a ton of naturally mined gold ore. When dismantled and sorted correctly, e-waste turns hazardous disposal liabilities into lucrative revenue streams.

Grading Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)

Grade Tier Components / Scrap Source Value Driver
High Grade Server motherboards, telecom base station cards, RAM memory sticks, ceramic CPU processors, gold-pin connectors. Heavy gold plating, platinum, and palladium contacts.
Medium Grade Standard desktop motherboards, laptop PCBs, network switches, graphic cards. Moderate gold flashing, IC chip content, and copper traces.
Low Grade Power supply boards (PSU), CRT monitor boards, washing machine single-layer brown/green boards. Primarily basic copper transformers and aluminium heatsinks.

Dismantling & Depollution Protocols

Before selling or processing electronic scrap, proper pre-treatment is essential:

  • Remove Batteries First: Lithium-ion pouch cells and lead-acid UPS batteries must be safely detached to prevent fires in shredders.
  • Separate Heatsinks and Transformers: Strip large aluminium heatsinks and copper coils off low-grade boards to sell them separately as clean metal scrap.
  • Safe Handling of CRT & Bulbs: Never smash fluorescent backlights or mercury switches, which emit toxic vapor.
E-Waste Management Rules & Compliance

Bulk commercial scrap generators and recyclers must operate with authorized Pollution Control Board (CPCB/SPCB) consent and issue official destruction/recycling certificates to corporate clients under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines.
