The high transaction value and bulk nature of the scrap commodity business make it an attractive target for bad actors. Whether dealing with metal consignments, plastic bales, or industrial e-waste, understanding common fraud patterns and enforcing disciplined trading protocols is critical to protecting your hard-earned capital.

Common Scams in the Scrap Trading Industry

Scammers typically rely on urgency and high-margin promises to bypass standard verification checks. Here are the most prevalent schemes:

1. The Fake Payment Screenshot / Delayed NEFT Trick

The buyer sends a forged bank transfer screenshot or initiates a scheduled NEFT transaction outside banking hours, demanding immediate release of the transport truck. Once the truck departs your yard, the transfer is cancelled or bounces due to insufficient funds.

2. Weight Manipulation at Private Weighbridges

When selling material, an unscrupulous buyer may insist on weighing the loaded vehicle exclusively at a specific private weighbridge known to them. Through scale tampering or improper tare calibration, they record significantly lower tonnage than actual weight, resulting in heavy financial loss for the seller.

3. Unjustified Quality Rejection at Factory Gate

Upon unloading the material at the destination factory, the buyer claims the material has high moisture or severe contamination (e.g. claiming 15% deduction on clean metal scrap). Because returning the freight is expensive, the seller is forced to accept a steep, unfair discount on the spot.

4. Advance Fee / Registration Fee Scam

A fake buyer contacts you claiming to have a massive government or multinational scrap auction contract. They promise huge volume but demand an upfront "tender document fee" or "gate pass security deposit". Genuine buyers never ask sellers to pay upfront security deposits for routine purchases.

Golden Rule of Safe Trading

Never dispatch material or allow a truck to exit your gate based on transfer receipts or SMS screenshots. Always check your live bank balance or UPI account directly through your own banking app.

Essential Safety Checklist on ScrapXtrade

  • Verify Business Identity: Check the trader's profile on ScrapXtrade. Look for uploaded business cards, GST details, and verified operational status.
  • Use Dual Independent Weighbridges: Always weigh the truck (Gross weight and Tare weight) at a reputable public computerized weighbridge near the loading yard before departure.
  • Standardize Payment Terms: For new or unknown buyers, insist on structured terms: partial advance upon loading, and full balance settlement before truck gate-pass release at destination.
  • Live Video Inspection: Before shipping bulk scrap across states, conduct a live WhatsApp or video call to showcase sample lots, material moisture levels, and packaging condition.
